Vickey Hoy, Secretary, Boosters Club
Dave Hedrick, Patsy Hedrick, Carole Smalls, Beth Martin, Mary Pelz
Agenda items discussed:
Sports Awards Ceremonies/Athletic Program Issues : Improvements/Challenges
Discussion :
- Recognition and support by the Administration is important and has been lacking.
- We would like to have an Administrator attend the events and announce scholar athletes
- Not having up-to-date rosters is a chronic problem and an impediment to many functions/ activities
- Sports awards Invitations need more information(length of program, awards presented etc) for parents to plan appropriately
- Attendees have not had dinner and thus are more likely to leave the event early
- Some coaches do not encourage their athletes to attend
- Some teams have their own banquets, which diminishes importance of Sports Awards Ceremony.
- Some coaches do not adhere to their allotted time during remarks; thus makes it difficult for families to know how long the event will last.
- The printed program is difficult to produce accurately due to lack of up-to-date rosters.
- There is a general perception of lack of support of the Athletic Program at Blair.
Decisions :
- A small group will meet with Mr.Gainous to discuss improving and revitalizing the Blair Athletic Program.
- Mr. Miller will encourage coaches to have their team banquets on a date after the Sports Awards Ceremony rather than before.
- The Boosters will consider serving dinner prior to the ceremony, to discourage early departures
Season Passes for Athletic Events:
Discussion:
- MCPS allows schools to sell Season Passes; prices are $30 for adults, $18 for students. Students under age 7 are admitted free. A $70 pass is available for the whole year. Schools are responsible for printing up their own season passes; the group asked about the type of paper these need to be printed on (to avoid counterfeit passes). We would need to communicate the Blair sports schedules and the availability of passes (if we decide to offer them) with PTAs of elementary and middle schools
Decision:
- Dave and Patsy Hedrick volunteered to work on this suggestion. We may do a pilot with lacrosse in the spring season, or wait until Fall 2007 to begin offering season passes.
Artificial Turf for Stadium Field:
Discussion:
- Park and Planning may have already given preliminary approval for Blair to receive artificial turf.
- Writing letters to obtain final funds for project may be necessary.
Decision:
- Diane will confirm with P & P status. Letters of support depend on status.
Treasures Report :
- Account Balance as of Dec. 4, 2006: $40,550.95.
- Over the past year, the Boosters have contributed funds to purchase new bleachers on the upper field, reseeding of the upper field, and a new PA system for the stadium field; as well as making a contribution to the After-Prom committee and supporting other special requests.
Volunteer Recruitment:
Discussion:
- There is a chronic problem of not having enough volunteers. This hinders the Boosters’ ability to do more for the athletic program than simply purchase and sell food at the concession stand and host the sports awards ceremonies.
- There are not enough announcers for games (other than football), and announcing is often not planned prior to a game.
- There are no printed programs at games.
- New strategies for getting parents of athletes involved were discussed such as having coaches take a more active role and/or having members of the Boosters Club contact parents directly.
Decision:
- Job descriptions will be sent to Beth Martin. Diane will add Beth to all emails calling for volunteers.
Officers/ New Roles for Next Year
Discussion:
- New jobs such as Volunteer Coordinator, Sports Awards Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, Shopper etc. possibly need to be created and recruited for.
Decision:
- Everyone present will think about restructuring of roles and officers, and this item will be discussed at the next meeting.
